Hey everyone, at this point, I’m sure you’ve heard of all the stuff going on with fantasy sports sites (in the US). As a designer, I am frequently asked about designing and building fantasy sports sites and what all goes into setting one up.
As you can imagine, they are quite complex. Regardless, I wanted to post a few updates about what I know of the industry and the direction I feel it will head at this point.
This reminds me a lot of the changes with many betting sites from years ago. While proponents of fantasy sports claim they are largely skill, others believe they are strongly luck-based games and would fall into a different category.
At the same time, some companies are still offering fantasy sports web design services. If you are looking to run your own fantasy site, I would strongly advise you to research the laws and implications before getting everything setup, especially since the costs of setting up a site of that nature can extend far into the 6 figure and up range. Another company has posted some updates on their Twitter, so you can check those out too.
If you aren’t super familiar with fantasy sports, check this video out:
I’ll post more updates to this post when I have them. At this point, it feels like the investigations are going to take months (or years) and we won’t know anything conclusive for quite some time.
